IS A HAG CHAIR SUITABLE FOR HYPERMOBILITY CONDITIONS?

It is estimated that around 20% of adults in the UK have hypermobile joints, which equates to approx 13.5 million people! So this is a lot of people who need care and help in managing their condition. In short the answer to the question is Yes, a HAG chair is suitable for people with hypermobility, we will explore whether its the best chair below. Lets start with ..

WHAT IS HYPERMOBILITY?

Hypermobility refers to an unusually large range of movement in the joints. While some people may have hypermobile joints without any issues, others may experience pain, instability, fatigue, and even frequent injuries. Understanding the condition is key to managing its symptoms and maintaining a good quality of life.

Hypermobility occurs when the connective tissues, such as ligaments, are more elastic than usual, allowing joints to move beyond the normal range. It is sometimes referred to as "double-jointedness," although this term is medically inaccurate.
There are different forms of hypermobility:
Generalized Hypermobility: Affects multiple joints throughout the body.
Localized Hypermobility: Affects a single joint or group of joints.
Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD): Encompasses individuals who have symptoms related to joint hypermobility but do not meet the criteria for more complex syndromes.
Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS): A genetic connective tissue disorder that includes hypermobility as a key feature, along with skin and tissue fragility.

Common Symptoms

  • Joint pain and stiffness
  • Frequent joint dislocations or subluxations (partial dislocations)
  • Fatigue
  • Poor coordination and balance
  • Digestive issues (in some cases)
  • Anxiety or autonomic dysfunction (in conditions like hEDS)

How is Hypermobility Diagnosed?

A healthcare provider may use tools like the Beighton Score to assess joint hypermobility. Diagnosis may also involve a detailed medical history, physical examination, and in some cases, genetic testing if a connective tissue disorder is suspected.

Treatment and Management

There is no cure for hypermobility, but there are many ways to manage symptoms and improve joint stability.

  1. Physiotherapy - One of the most effective treatments, physiotherapy focuses on:
    Strengthening muscles around joints
    Improving posture and balance
    Enhancing proprioception (body awareness)

  2. Pain ManagementOver-the-counter pain relievers (e.g., paracetamol or ibuprofen)
    Prescription medications for chronic pain
Heat therapy, cold packs, or TENS units

  3. Lifestyle ModificationsLow-impact exercise (e.g., swimming, cycling, yoga with care)
    Joint protection techniques
Ergonomic adjustments at home or work

  4. Occupational TherapyAn occupational therapist can help adapt daily activities and recommend supportive equipment or braces.

  5. Psychological SupportCognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or counseling can be beneficial for managing chronic pain, fatigue, and emotional health.

IS A HAG CHAIR THE BEST CHAIR FOR HYPERMOBILITY?

HÅG chairs are known for promoting dynamic sitting, meaning they encourage movement even while seated. This can be beneficial for hypermobile individuals, as it:

*Reduces Joint Stiffness: Subtle movements can prevent joints from locking or becoming painful.
*Encourages Good Posture: The tilt mechanisms help maintain spinal alignment.
*Provides Customizable Support: Many HÅG models allow adjustments for seat depth, lumbar height, and tilt tension.
*Lightweight and Easy to Adjust: This is helpful for users with limited strength or joint instability.
  *Potential Limitations

Despite their ergonomic benefits, HÅG chairs may not be the best fit for everyone with hypermobility:
*Active Sitting Isn’t for All: Some individuals may need a more stable base rather than continuous motion.
*Lack of Medical-Grade Support: HÅG chairs do not feature lumbar pumps, thoracic support, or bespoke spinal contouring.
*Seat Firmness: Certain models may not offer enough cushioning for users with chronic pain or sensitivity.

The important thing to remember is that the HAG chairs are "off the shelf chairs", this means they cant have many adjustments made to them in manufacture and they are made to one size only. They already include good lumbar support, chairs such as the SOFI MESH have adjustable lumbar and a memory foam seat, however whilst very comfortable they are heavy to move around.

ALTERNATIVES, WHAT ABOUT A BESPOKE CHAIR?

For those with more complex postural needs, a bespoke chair like the Spynamics may offer better support. Spynamics chairs are custom-built to the user’s body, providing targeted support for the lumbar, thoracic, and pelvic regions. This level of customization can be especially helpful for managing hypermobility-related symptoms.

Emotion Office offer a free face time assessment which takes approx 20 mins, a custom made chair can then be built with endless adjustments - eg. memory foam seat and back, thoracic pump. lumbar pump cocyx cut-out. These chairs are available in a wide range of fabrics and colours to suit your office.

If you need a particularly narrow chair, or a wider chair, or a shorter gas stem, Spynamics chairs can be made for any need.

FINAL THOUGHTS

To get the very best for a hypermobility condition you will benefit most from free assessment for a Spynamics chair which can be made to suit your individual needs. These chairs are often used for Access to Work grants as well, which is another route you may wish to consider if you have hypermobillity.
