I’m A Stroke Survivor – Where Can I Get A Specialist Ergonomic Office Chair?

I’m A Stroke Survivor – Where Can I Get A Specialist Ergonomic Office Chair?

I’m a Stroke Survivor – Where Can I Get an Ergonomic Office Chair?

If you've had a stroke and are finding it difficult to sit comfortably at a desk, you may be wondering:

Where can I get an office chair that is suitable for me after a stroke?

Finding the right chair can be particularly difficult if you have weakness on one side of your body, reduced mobility, problems with posture or need additional support for an arm.

You may have searched for ergonomic office chairs for stroke survivors, specialist office chairs or chairs with extra postural support, only to find that most chairs are designed for a fairly typical user.

That's where a bespoke ergonomic office chair can make a difference.

What type of office chair is suitable after a stroke?

There isn't one particular office chair that is right for everyone who has had a stroke.

The effects of a stroke can vary considerably from person to person. Some people may have weakness in an arm or leg, while others may experience changes in balance, posture, mobility or fatigue.

This means that the right office chair needs to take the individual's requirements into account.

Depending on your needs, you may consider:

An adjustable ergonomic office chair

A good ergonomic office chair will normally allow you to adjust features such as:

Seat height

Seat depth

Backrest position

Lumbar support

Armrest height and position

Recline or back angle

Thoracic & Sacral Pumps

Made to measure seat and back

Memory Foam Seat & Back

These adjustments can help you find a more comfortable working position.

However, an adjustable chair is still a standard manufactured product. It has been designed to fit a range of people rather than being made specifically for one individual.

An office chair with supportive armrests

If you've experienced weakness in one arm following a stroke, arm support may be particularly important.

Adjustable armrests can help support the arms while working at a desk and can contribute to a more stable sitting position.

However, the positioning of the armrest matters.

If it is too far away, too low, too high or positioned incorrectly for your body, it may not give you the support you are looking for.

A specialist postural support chair

Some people may need more extensive postural support than a conventional ergonomic office chair provides.

Specialist chairs can offer additional adjustment and different configurations of back and arm support.

But a chair being described as "specialist" doesn't automatically mean that it is right for you.

The important question is:

Can the chair be configured to meet your individual needs?

Would a bespoke office chair be better after a stroke?

For some people, a standard ergonomic chair provides everything they need.

For others, it doesn't.

If you've tried conventional office chairs and found them too wide, too deep, uncomfortable or unable to provide support where you need it, a bespoke office chair may be worth considering.

Rather than selecting a standard chair and trying to adjust yourself to it, a bespoke chair is designed around your measurements and requirements.

This can be particularly helpful when you have differences in strength, mobility or posture following a stroke.

What does "bespoke office chair" actually mean?

A bespoke ergonomic chair isn't simply a standard chair with a few extra adjustments.

The chair can be built around the individual, taking account of measurements such as:

  • Your height

  • Your body proportions

  • Your preferred sitting position

  • The amount of seat support you require

  • Your back and lumbar support requirements

  • The support required for your arms

  • The dimensions of your working environment

The aim is to create an office chair that supports you as an individual, rather than expecting you to fit a standard chair.

A real example of an office chair after a stroke

One of our customers contacted Emotion Office after having a stroke in February 2025.

They experienced loss of mobility on their left side. Although their mobility was gradually returning, they particularly needed additional support for their left arm.

They lived in a remote area and couldn't find anywhere locally that could help them find an office chair suitable for their needs.

They were understandably nervous about buying a specialist chair online.

Instead of asking them to travel, we arranged an online ergonomic chair consultation with Phil, our ergonomic chair specialist.

They told us:

“I had a stroke in February 2025 and lost mobility on my left side which is slowly returning but my left arm especially needs extra support. I live in a remote area and nowhere locally could help me find an office chair to suit my needs, so I started looking online but was very nervous.”

An online consultation from the comfort of home

During the video consultation, Phil was able to discuss the customer's individual requirements and the problems they were experiencing with standard office chairs.

One of the problems was that conventional chairs were simply too wide and uncomfortable.

Rather than trying to find a standard chair that was "close enough", Phil explained how a bespoke ergonomic chair could be built around their individual measurements.

All the customer needed was a tape measure.

This allowed the required dimensions to be established without them having to travel.

The information was then passed to Kath in our sales office, who prepared a quotation.

The customer was surprised at how affordable the bespoke chair was and decided to place the order.

Their chair arrived within 10 working days.

What happens after your bespoke chair arrives?

Choosing the right chair is only part of the process.

A chair needs to be correctly adjusted to the person using it.

Once the chair arrived, Phil arranged another video call with the customer and talked them through adjusting:

  • Lumbar support

  • Chair height

  • Seat depth

  • Overall positioning

This helped ensure that the chair was properly aligned with their posture.

The customer subsequently told us:

“Now I have my bespoke professionally fitted ergonomic office chair which has enabled me to return to work. I have now been using it for well over a month as I can sit comfortably as it supports my posture and weak arm. This has enabled me to deal with my fatigue and increase my working hours.”

Can an ergonomic chair help with fatigue after a stroke?

Fatigue is commonly reported by people during stroke recovery, and working at a desk can be particularly tiring if you are also struggling to maintain a comfortable sitting position.

An ergonomic chair cannot treat the effects of a stroke or remove stroke-related fatigue.

However, providing appropriate physical support can help remove unnecessary discomfort and physical effort associated with sitting and working at a desk.

For this customer, having a chair that supported their posture and weaker arm using an extra velcro strap - helped them work more comfortably and gradually increase their working hours.

Do I need to travel to get a specialist office chair?

No.

If you live in a rural or remote area, travelling to a specialist ergonomic furniture showroom may be difficult.

At Emotion Office, you can arrange an online consultation with an ergonomic chair specialist.

You can discuss your requirements from home, take your measurements with guidance from our team and talk through the options available.

Our customer said:

“I highly recommend using Emotion Office as they offer an online consultation so I didn't have to travel, but you can also go to their office in Shrewsbury if you prefer. Spoke with their expert Phil to establish what would suit my needs to be comfortable in an office environment from the comfort of my home. Quality built product. Brilliant after service support as well.”

What if I don't know what type of chair I need?

That's completely understandable.

You shouldn't need to know whether you need a particular lumbar mechanism, seat depth or armrest configuration before contacting an ergonomic chair specialist.

That's what the consultation is for.

We can discuss:

What are you struggling with?

Where do you need additional support?

What is uncomfortable about your current chair?

Do you have difficulty maintaining your posture?

Does one side of your body require different support?

Are standard office chairs too wide, too deep or otherwise uncomfortable?

From there, we can establish whether a standard ergonomic chair is likely to meet your requirements or whether a bespoke office chair would be more appropriate.

A bespoke chair designed around you

There are many ergonomic office chairs available, and a standard adjustable chair may be perfectly suitable for some people after a stroke.

But if you have specific requirements that standard chairs cannot accommodate, a bespoke ergonomic chair gives you another option.

At Emotion Office, we don't expect you to know which chair you need before you speak to us.

We start with you, your measurements and your individual requirements.

Our customer's experience demonstrates how this can work:

“I am so happy with the purchase, it really helps me to combat daily fatigue and start to get my life back. Emotion Office offer a gold star service.”
